I've just watched the 'Common Ground' video featuring Dennis Chambers and the amazing 14 year old drummer Tony Royster Jnr. I must say I am amazed. This kid is outstanding

Dennis plays well, he playes double drums with Tony on a couple of tunes leaving Tony lots of space to play and then he is featured on a couple of tunes that have been written for the video, the usual funk/fusion affair.

But I can't believe the way Tony plays. It would be fair enough to say that he plays well for a 14 year old, but he actually plays better than some of the 'big name' players that all ways crop up.

Dennis has been described (by Vinnie) as a freak of nature, and he is, but I can't cohmprehend how this kid has managed to get to such a high standard at such a young age.

What do you guys think?

Someone posted a link to a vid of that kid a while ago.
What can bew said? He is amazing for his age. Heck, he's amazing period.Only time will tell if he develops the musical discretion while playing with musicians. He's certainly hanging out with the right crowd for that as it is.
I can't help but wonder what it must be like growing up in that environment though. I hope his parents see to it that he still excels in school and such.

JFYI. As a recent attendee to a Tony Royster Jr. clinic I can say with utmost certainty that his parents are looking out for his best interests. They were at the clinic!!! His dad is his manager. From a very reliable source, I was told that Royster will be starting college soon after graduation. He has been offered a BOWLING scholarship to a college not far from his home in Georgia. He's looking into studying music or medicine.
